Gourds For Diabetes - Bitter And Bottle Gourd

Diabetes, whether type-I or type-II cannot be cured but can certainly be controlled. There is no other alternative for those suffering from type-I diabetes but to take insulin daily. But those suffering from type-II diabetes can certainly control diabetes by taking proper anti-diabetic medications, correct diet and daily exercise.

Among the vegetables, two gourds - the bitter gourd, also known as bitter melon and bottle gourd have shown to be quite useful for those suffering from diabetes.

Bitter melons contain compounds known as cucurbitane triterpenoids, which have potent anti-diabetic properties and help in effective glucose metabolism. Besides that these compounds also promote effective

fat metabolism, so they consumption of bitter gourd can also help those suffering from obesity. Drinking a cup
of bitter gourd juice early in the morning can be quite effective in maintaining healthy blood sugar levels.

The other gourd that is gaining popularity is bottle gourd known as 'lauki' in India. Ayurvedic physicians have been prescribing it for centuries to patients suffering from high blood sugar. Having a glass of bottle gourd juice early in the morning on empty stomach can help in controlling the blood sugar levels naturally. It is also very low in calories and also has natural diuretic property.

But remember, these vegetables are not substitute for your anti-diabetic medications and should only be seen as health supplements for diabetics.
