Meshashringi - A Potent Ayurvedic Herb For Controlling Blood Sugar

Meshashringi, known as Gymnema in English and Gurmar in Sanskrit is a potent Ayurvedic herb which is used for controlling blood sugar in patients suffering from Type-II or non-insulin dependent diabetes melitus. Its Sanskrit name ´gudmar´ means destroyer of sugar. The priciple constituent present in meshashringi which gives it the property to control blood sugar is gymnemic acid.

Besides helping in lowering the sugar levels, mesharingi leaf extract has also shown to have a regenerating effect on beta cells of the pancreas. It also helps in increasing the effectiveness of insulin and hence is also very useful for those suffering from

insulin intolerance also known as insulin insensitivity, in which the pancreas produces normal quantity of insulin, but the insulin becomes less effective in lowering
the blood sugar levels.

Mesharingi has also shown to lower the cravings for sweet foods, a trait commonly found in people suffering from diabetes.

Those suffering from diabetes can benefit immensely from chewing 5-6 leaves of meshashringi daily. One can also make a decoction by boiling meshashringi leaves in water til the level reduces by a quarter and have it after your meals. Alternatively, add 5-6 meshashringi leaves, 3-4 bael leaves, a teaspoon each of turmeric powder and fenugreek seeds along with a cup of water in a mixer and make a juice. Add 2 teaspoons of lemon juice to it and drink this juice early in the morning just before before your breakfast.
